14 Best Hostels in Copenhagen
Table of Contents
The hostels in Copenhagen might be some of the best in all of Europe.
And trust me, I know. During my 8 year tenure of traveling the world, I’ve stayed in hundreds of hostels. These hostels range from an earth-shattering, dirty $ 3-a-night hostel in Nepal – which had a faint smell of seeped into every corner – to an unforgettable $ 60-a-night hostel in Europe.
But on the reverse side I’ve stayed in hostels for under $10 which was fantastic, and hostels 4 times that price that would turn your stomach.
So the famous saying “You get what you pay for.” isn’t always true when talking about hostels.
For the most part, Copenhagen has excellent hostels. There are eco-friendly hostels, hostels that offer free yoga, party hostels, and budget-friendly ones as well.

Steel House Copenhagen
No list of Copenhagen hostels is complete without mentioning Steel House Copenhagen. Steel House stands out from its competition. And it is hands down, one of the best – if not the best – hostels in Copenhagen. The private rooms are insane! I toured one private room that had an amazing view of the river. You could almost see to Freetown Christiania.
Steel House Location
Steel House is located in the center of Copenhagen, around 6 minutes walking distance from the Central station. This means that within 30 minutes of leaving the airport you can be relaxing in the hostel lounge with a drink.

Yeah, Steel House is one Copenhagen Hostel you can’t-miss! And it is not too far from the city center. And within walking distance from Copenhagen central station.
Sleep in Heaven Copenhagen
The historic Sleep in Heaven hostel was one of the first hostels to open in Copenhagen. This hostel has been welcoming people from all over the world for over 21 years! Sleep in Heaven is near the famous Assistens cemetery and within 10 minute walk of a metro station. From the hostel to downtown takes around 30 minutes.
What Makes Sleep in Heaven One of the Best Hostels in Copenhagen?
Well, I could start by telling you that the hostel has won two awards naming it ” the best hostel in Denmark”. Or that it’s located in the vibrant and popular area of Nørrebro. Or that hostel is surrounded by local bars and cheap shops. I could start with all those reasons, but I’ll start by saying that the hostel is famous for its friendly staff, warm atmosphere, and fun activities.
The rooms are clean and homely. They have a beautiful courtyard area for chilling. The entire vibe of the hostel is focused on creating a comfortable atmosphere.
The downside of the hostel is that they have a strict cancellation policy and age restorations. The hostel also has a two-day cancellation policy. Failure to cancel within 2 days results in a fee equal to the first night of the booking.
They also have an age limit. They permit no younger than 16 and older than 35 to stay in the hostel.
Those things aside this is still a great hostel, and one of the most relaxing ones in Copenhagen, Denmark. Though, because of its location, it is not ideal if you only have 3 days in Denmark.
Urban House Copenhagen by MEININGER
Meininger brand has a few hostels scattered around Europe in places like Vienna and Berlin. Perhaps their most ambitious hostel is Urban House in Copenhagen. Urban House Copenhagen prides itself on being a hotel/hostel hybrid
This hostel is located downtown. It also has a trendy style that fits its location in vibrant Vesterbro (One of the coolest areas of the city).
In typical Dane fashion, the hostel has a bike shop and bar. Two of the Danish people’s biggest loves. Speaking of danish loves, Danes are obsessed with health so the hostel also has daily bike rides and yoga classes.
Urban House also has a designated quiet room, perfect for planning your time in Copenhagen, and a movie and game room.
Lastly, the bar has local craft beer, live music, a pool, and a courtyard garden.
Overall Urban House is a superb choice for those wanting to stay downtown without shelling out a ton of cash for a hotel.
The hostel dorms book out early during high season so booking in advance is smart.
Urban Camper Copenhagen
Urban Camper Copenhagen isn’t well known….yet. But it’s still worthy of being on the list of best hostels in Copenhagen Denmark.
Urban Camper Copenhagen Location
Located in Copenhagen’s coolest neighborhood, Nørrebro. This hostel is around 30 minutes from downtown. Don’t worry it’s an easy commute. Plus, its unique concept makes it one Copenhagen hostel worth checking out!
What’s Urban Camper Copenhagen all about?
Urban Camper Copenhagen is a new idea for a hostel. It takes all the things you love about camping and places them inside! It is a Copenhagen hostel with a perfect location
Copenhagen Hostel: Danhostel Copenhagen City Perks
Besides the perfect location, there are a few perks that make it exceptional! First Danhostel is the largest hostel in Europe… yep, you read that right. Europe’s biggest hostel has 1,020 beds. Meaning that there is no lack of other travelers to meet. Some rooms also boast an excellent view of Islands Brygge harbor and the Opera House.
There’s a cheap all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet. And they offer a restaurant for lunch and dinner.
The hostel is a great place for drinking and is located at one of the cheapest bars in the city. And not too far from central Copenhagen.
Annex Copenhagen
Budget-friendly, great location, and lively community are just a few reasons why Annex Copenhagen tops the list of best hostels.
Annex Copenhagen is located in Vesterbro. And if you asked a Dane”What is Copenhagen famous for?” There’s a good chance people will mention Vesterbro. But more on that in a second.
What makes Annex Copenhagen one of the best hostels in Copenhagen?
Well, many reasons, but one is location.. location.. location. Annex Copenhagen sits in the center of Vesterbro. For those of you who don’t know, Vesterbro has been called one of the best neighborhoods in the world by numerous media outlets.
From the hostel, you can easily reach the meatpacking district, a thriving food market, and one of the most foodie-friendly areas of the city.
The rooms are bright and vibrant. And the hostel has a welcoming atmosphere that natures a sense of community. This Copenhagen hostel prides itself on being funky and functional.
For you, travelers who fear the dreaded hostel bathrooms, fear not. All the bathrooms were redone just a couple of years ago.
There’s an optional organic breakfast buffet. Or you can save money by cooking your breakfast in the kitchen.
Woodah Hostel
Woodah Boutique Hostel is one of the best hostels in Copenhagen. With excellent cleanliness, and a superb staff the fact that Woodah boutique Hostel is one of the best in Copenhagen shouldn’t come as a surprise. It is an amazing hostel.
Location
The hostel also has the perfect location in Vesterbro.
What Makes Woodah So Special?
Woodah has a different mindset from many of the other hostels on this list. Woodah hostel has the dream of sustainable travel. The hostel has a focus on organic living. (they serve a mean organic breakfast FOR FREE.)
The wooden bunk beds are custom-made and provide a lot of privacy. Woodah supports local, organic, and fair-trade products.
Woodah offers yoga mats and equipment free of charge. If the weather in Copenhagen is nice then they also offer free yoga classes in the yard.
Woodah is a quaint, and relaxing hostel. There is a craft brewery right across the street. And while they do have a bar, this isn’t a party hostel. Rather this is a great place to stay for a personal experience, and for those who want a relaxing night. It’s a great base for intrepid travelers who would rather spend their time sightseeing rather than nursing a hangover.
Generator Hostel Copenhagen
The generator is one of the most popular hostel chains spread around Europe. And it has finally made its way to Copenhagen.
I’ve stayed in Generator hostels from Dublin to Venice and have always had a great time in their hostels. Though they are known for being large and loud. So those seeking peace might want to look elsewhere.
Generator Hostel Copenhagen is located right outside Kongens Nytorv, the largest square in the city. As the hostel says, “you are a hop, skip, and a jump from everything the city has to offer”.
What Makes Generator Copenhagen Special?
Hands down, Generator Copenhagen might be my favorite generator hostel. Other than Generator Venice, (where I met my wife, of course). The hostel has won numerous awards such as the best hostel in Denmark in 2016.
The hostel’s prime location lets you quickly whip around the city on foot and bike, and you can easily see most of the things Copenhagen offers. The hostel has a buzzing bar and lounge, and it’s a great spot for nightly drinks and entertainment.
They also have low prices and a variety of dorm options.
Globalhagen Hostel
Globalhagen‘s a truly special Copenhagen hostel. It has an inspiring mission, that lets you help others at no added cost to you!
If the multicultural area of Nørrebro appeals to you then Globalhagen Hostel is another of the best hostels in Copenhagen.
What sets Globalhagen apart from other Copenhagen Hostels?
For one thing the story. Globalhagen Hostel is entirely designed and built by volunteers! And the hostel is a nonprofit! How crazy is that? Part of your room fee goes straight towards supporting projects in various countries around the world. Globalhagen has an emphasis on bettering human rights. The rooms are named after the countries in which they have projects.
More than just helping to make the planet a better place, Globalhagen Hostel has a strong focus on equality. The hostel is all about accepting everyone for who they are, no matter race, gender, sexuality, or age. Globalhagen wants to build, as well as strengthen, a strong community.
The hostel is eco-friendly and most food and beverages that are served are fair trade. And great shared bathroom.
And while they have a bar, this isn’t a party hostel. Rather it’s a more relaxed and chill vibe to it.
Bedwood Hostel
Bedwoods cheap price for its prime location makes it a contender for one of the best hostels in Copenhagen… even if it is a little rough around the edges.
If you want to stay within a stone’s throw of picturesque Nyhavn; well, then Bedwood Hostel is your cheapest choice! Nyhavn the most popular neighborhood in Copenhagen with a scenic port area, boats, and cafes.
What makes Bedwood one of Copenhagen’s Best Hostels?
While Bedwood isn’t my favorite hostel on this list, it is still one of the best in Copenhagen. Plus, it is budget-friendly, especially for the location. The hostel also offers a haven for those looking for a home-away-from-home atmosphere.
The hostel theme is “hygge” – as the Danes would put it. Which roughly translates to comfort and coziness. You can make a new friend over a couple of beers, sit down and strum on a guitar, or have a cup of tea while reading a book.
When you compare the price to the location, it is unbeatable. They have a variety of dorms at low prices.
The staff and atmosphere and location are all top-notch. However, the downside is that the facilities, cleanliness, and security aren’t the best.
Danhostel Copenhagen Bellahøj
Don’t be confused, as I am not repeating myself from the Danhostel earlier on this list. Our second Danhostels is another viable choice for Copenhagen hostel goers.
Our second Danhostel of the day is located in Bellahøj, which is a little bit farther outside the city. However, this Copenhagen hostel makes for a great place for peace. It takes around 15 -30 minutes to get to the famous “Strøget” pedestrian street in the downtown area.
Why is Danhostel Copenhagen Bellahøj One of the Best Places to Stay in Copenhagen?
Well, it’s laid back vibe, low price, and homely charm. Danhostel Copenhagen Bellahøj has green and peaceful surroundings. The hostel’s sites are located nearby a beautiful park.
They have a lot of extra perks that make it a superb place to stay. They have table tennis, video games, gardens, places to barbecue a TV room, and places to park. This has free WiFi because we aren’t living in the 90s.
Overall, the hostel is great value and offers excellent facilities and security. The biggest downside is the location.
Kirsten Room in Apartment
Okay, our last place is Kirsten Room in an Apartment. Located in downtown Copenhagen, just 3 minutes from Copenhagen’s Inner Lakes.
What makes Kirsten’s Room in Apartment Special?
So Kirsten Room isn’t so much a hostel as a private room in an apartment. Perfect for couples this hostel has everything you need. And a great escape from crowded hostels. There TV, Internet, and a fridge.
The downside is that is located on the 4th floor. It’s also not budget-friendly.
Here we go! These are the best hostels in Copenhagen! Great hostels for a great city. What’s not to love!
