Three Natural Wonders You Can’t Miss on a Mexican Adventure

Mexico is filled with gorgeous natural wonders. Here are the best natural wonders you’ll want to explore on your next Mexican adventure.

Mexico’s endless beauty is meant to be discovered up close. Too much time in this part of the world is never enough, meaning a little pre-trip preparation can go a long way to ensuring you can make the most of your time here. Whether you enjoy the sights at your own pace or join a guided tour led by local experts, researching what to see and do will save you stress once you land. To lend a helping hand, we’ve compiled three of the most breathtaking natural wonders you can’t afford to miss when visiting this enchanting country.

What’s in This Article:

The Cenotes are Some of the Best Natural Wonders of Mexico

Largely concentrated within the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico has thousands of cenotes. These magical sites are characterized by small pools of (often extremely clear) water that sit within natural sinkholes. Historically, cenotes were an important water source for the Mayan civilization, but today, they attract visitors from afield for a slightly different reason.

Renowned for their breathtaking beauty, Mexico’s cenotes can be enjoyed from above or up close by dipping into the beckoning waters. Grab your snorkeling gear and plunge into one of these historic pools for an unforgettable experience. One of the most famous cenotes is Ik Kil, just a short drive from Chichen Itza. Accessing the site requires a small fee, but it’s well worth adding to your itinerary, particularly if you plan to visit the nearby Wonder of the World. It’s common for tour operators to combine visits to both sites in the same trip, so make sure to do your research to find the best option for you.

Los Coloradas

The kaleidoscopic landscape of Los Coloradas is truly a sight to behold and shouldn’t be far from the top of your itinerary on a Mexican adventure. Here, you’ll find the vivid pink man-made lakes that sit on the very tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, so colored due to reddish water-based organisms attracted by the lakes’ high salt content.

The bad news is that you won’t be the first to have stumbled across this impressive site. In fact, due largely to the rise in social media, Los Coloradas is one of Mexico’s worst-kept secrets; as such, measures have been taken to restrict visitors from exploring the lakes as freely as they once could. However, it’s still possible to appreciate the sheer beauty of the pink lakes by following the signposts—but don’t expect to be able to take a dip in the waters.

Tamul Waterfall is a Beautiful Natural Wonder of Mexico

Rounding off this list (and sticking to our aquatic theme) is Tamul Waterfall in the Huasteca Potosina region. Known locally as Cascada de Tamul, this unmissable natural gem can be enjoyed by hiking to the top or paddling along the azure river. While it can’t lay claim to being Mexico’s highest waterfall, it’s no less spectacular than any other in the country and continues to attract visitors to marvel at its beauty. Unlike many other popular natural sites, you won’t be asked to admire it from the sidelines. Here, you can take to the waters in a kayak or boat, just make sure you bring your waterproofs!

While conditions will be most pleasant around April and May at the end of the dry season, the lack of rainfall can make the site slightly less impressive. However, conditions can become dangerous at the peak of the rainy season. Generally, the best time to visit is from October to early spring, so if your Mexico adventure coincides with these timings, make sure you add Tamul to your itinerary. Of course, that’s not to say that the site can’t be enjoyed at other times of the year. It may just take some extra planning if you visit outside these months.
