Travel to the South Tyrol, Italy – Episode 812

Listen to about journey to South Tyrol, Italy as the Newbie Traveler talks to Lynne Nieman about this lovely area in northern Italy.

Lynne suggests, “what I would say is possibly gonna be geared additional toward persons who do want to be in the outdoor, or at the very least, you never have to be some form of hardcore, hiker or ski or a little something like that. But even somebody that just appreciates the great outdoor appreciates attractive mountains.”

“The Dolomite peaks are there. And, of training course, the Dolomites are also a UNESCO entire world heritage website. There are nine full Dolomite parks. And I. 6 of them are in the better Trentino Alto Adige location, possibly 3 or four of people that are specially in South Tyrol. So it’s a great area to respect the landscape or get out into the landscape, get out into the mountains.”

“There’s attractive, charming villages. There’s plenty of castles. If you’re a massive city man or woman, this is not your spot, but if you like the little charming towns, some historic sites, and a gorgeous natural landscape, then South Tyrol is for you.”

Lynne begins us in Castelrotto, which we use as a base for browsing the alpine meadow place of Alpe di Siusi. This is a wonderful, minimal-influence climbing encounter. It is not like mountaineering the Alta Through 1, which we talked about not too long ago.

She recommends a check out to the Prösels Castle, which sits below the Schlern mountain, or the castle around the city of Campo Tures by the Austrian border.

You can choose a day hike up to some of the mountain huts or hütte in the spot, like Pederü Mountain Hut, Sennes Hütte, or Fanes Mountain Hut. You can continue to be right away if you ebook in advance or just do a day vacation.

Make a stop at the beautiful Lago di Braies (Lake Braies) with its wonderful environmentally friendly waters, or end at the Augustinian abbey of Novacella exactly where the monks have been generating wine for just about 900 yrs. Stop by the tiny village of Santa Maddalena in the gorgeous Val di Funes. If you get pleasure from driving winding mountain roads, Lynne also implies the generate about Passo Gardena.

If you love the outdoors, then make a stop by to South Tyrol in Italy.

Andreas on Vacation to Adelaide, Australia – Episode 770

Many thanks for taking me back again to Adelaide, the place I expended 3 months on student exchange in 1992. Shout-out to Concordia Faculty!

But I do have to weigh in on the Captain Hahn controversy, mainly because I was stunned when you, Chris, stated that he was Danish, not German. Mainly because the name is clearly German.

What took place is that he was born on the island of Sylt, which had semi-autonomy within just the Danish Kingdom and turned element of Prussia in 1866 (immediately after Hahn’s dying).
So, it may well properly have been that he was a Danish citizen, but ethnically and linguistically, he was most almost certainly German (or Prussian). He also sailed on a German ship and took German settlers to South Australia.

Before the time of nation states, I constantly find it a bit tricky to say that somebody was of this or that citizenship. Particularly so when it will come to multi-ethnic empires or, like in the situation of Germany, to countries that simply just did not exist at the time. (Germany as a country state was only set up in 1871, following Hahn’s demise. Having said that, that doesn’t imply that persons didn’t have a notion of remaining German before, at minimum considering that the [failed] revolution of 1848.)
And even additional so in that fraught location, which gave us the famous Schleswig-Holstein question.

Right until right now, there is a German minority in Denmark and a Danish minority in Germany, both secured by rules and treaties.
I contact on this in my report about a really very long teach journey from Germany to Sweden, to close on a journey-relevant observe: https://andreasmoser.blog/2021/08/30/educate-stockholm/
