Altice cuts at least 30 News 12 jobs, with most layoffs in CT, NJ
Layoffs have hit at the News 12 cable and streaming network, resulting in a “small impact” on Connecticut operations, according to a spokesperson.
Cable giant Altice USA runs the network, which has its Connecticut headquarters in Norwalk.
According to industry news site TV News Check, at least 30 people were laid off at News 12 on Monday, with most cuts occurring in Connecticut and New Jersey.
About 400 employees remain at News 12 in the New York metro area, according to the company.
The network is pivoting to “more in-community reporting and events, creating content for streaming platforms, and making News12.com a user-friendly hub for all things local,” according to a statement.
Altice USA bought News 12’s corporate parent Cablevision for $17.7 billion in 2016, and soon moved the network’s main headquarters from Norwalk to New Jersey.
The family of Cablevision’s founder, Charles Dolan, sued Altice USA for job cuts and changes to News 12. A settlement was reached in the lawsuit in 2019.
Since its acquisition by Altice USA, News 12 has added streaming news service Cheddar to its offerings. Last month the network announced an editorial partnership with Time Out New York, with an emphasis on additional food and dining coverage.
Altice USA has drawn the scrutiny of state Attorney General William Tong in recent years over customer dissatisfaction with its Optimum broadband packages in Connecticut.
