Getting a taxi on holiday can be a struggle. Tourists often end up getting charged over the odds.

Although a taxi isn’t usually my first choice of transport on holiday, sometimes when you have a lot of luggage or arrive far outside the city centre it’s the best choice.

On a recent trip to Greece, I arrived at Corfu Port and needed to get a taxi into the city centre.

None of the taxis were operating using a metre and as I don’t have free roaming in Greece, I wasn’t able to order an Uber or check online how much it should cost.

The first driver we approached quoted us 15 euros (£13) for the five minute drive into the city centre.

This seemed expensive for the short drive so I thought I’d try using a taxi money-saving tip to get a cheaper price.

We told the initial driver that we’d have to go and get money out so he went with some other passengers.

After five minutes, we approached another taxi driver and offered him 10 euros (£8.67) to drive us to the same destination. He quoted 11 euros (£9.54) which we settled on.

Although I think we still definitely paid far over the odds for the short drive, we did manage to save a few pounds on the trip using this hack.

However, this tip would only work in a busy area where a driver will take another customer if you decide not to go.

British tourists could try bargaining with their driver although there’s no guarantee they will lower the price.
