Cross the continent in 15 days from Perth to Sydney

There are so many reasons why Australia needs to be explored thoroughly. Besides the great weather and impressive wildlife, the country has plenty of roads through nature and the Big Lap, the longest national highway in the world you can take on the N1. Considering the length and difficulty, it may seem like a stretch to take such a trip. However, if you’re packing your car and developing a meticulous plan, you’ll experience something extraordinary.

Therefore, we recommend a unique road trip from Perth, the world’s sunniest and most isolated place, to Sydney, one of the liveliest cities with over 100 beaches and famous buildings. The road takes about two weeks to complete by car, so here is a brief itinerary of the places you’ll get through. Make sure you prepare for the trip properly, so getting a eSIM card for a great internet connection is best to have a smooth car trip.

From Perth to Northam

If you’re not in a hurry, you can stay in Perth and explore the surroundings. One of the best things about this city is the quokka animal on Rottnest Island. This cute marsupial is known as the happiest animal in the world due to its smiley face.

While there, you can leave your car at the Perth Airport Parking; you only need to book a spot from the available providers. Of course, it would be best to drive around with your rented car to get accommodated.

Upon getting to Northam, you’ll get to walk along heritage buildings, check out the Perth Mint gold exhibition, and then continue driving. For an uninterrupted drive, consult your digital map, providing internet access on your device with eSIM iPhone or Android.

From Northam to Kalgoorlie

On the way to Kalgoorlie, you can get a tour of the Windward Balloon Adventure and see everything around from above. The duration is about five hours, and you’ll get to see the rural landscape of Avon Valley while the pilot will provide historical background and comments on the sights.

Once you reach Kalgoorlie, you can visit another gold pit, the Super Pit, Australia’s largest open pit mine that produces over 60 million ounces of gold per year.

From Kalgoorlie to Fraser Range

Exciting sights are coming to Fraser Range since this is an outback mining town. Home to the world’s largest Eucalypt Hardwood Forest, the city has one of the most impressive landscapes of granite hills. Then make your way to Cocklebiddy, and remember to book airport parking for when you arrive in Sydney. If you have time to spare, visit the Eye Bird Observatory to check out the museum and aviaries for endangered species.

From Cocklebiddy to Fowlers Bay

Buckle up your seats because this is one of the most extended distances to South Australia. During the almost seven hours stretch of road to Fowlers Bay, you can stop at Bunda Cliffs to see the 90-metre cliffs on the coastline or choose to do some whale watching at the Head of the Bight lookout. Of course, it’s best to look for accommodation after such a long time on the road. Fowles Bay is a great city where you can enjoy breakfast with views across salt marshes, so it’s the best opportunity to take a break and charge your batteries.

From Fowlers Bay to Ceduna

On the way to Ceduna, you can stop and do a detour to Cactus Beach, go surfing or visit Lake MacDonnell, known for its pink colour. When reaching Ceduna, make sure you eat the local dish of oysters at the Ceduna Oyster Bar. Still, considering the deep sea finishing the locals are doing, you can enjoy plenty of other delicious seafood.

From Ceduna to Port Kenny

Rest assured, because you’re halfway there! On the way to Port Kenny, the best thing to do is enjoy the seaside drive around Streaky Bay. If you’re interested in an educational experience, join the Baird Bay Ocean Eco Experience to have a tour down the beach and learn about the area’s ecology.

From Port Kenny to Port Augusta

Another long road to Port Augusta is on the way, but the place is the best for discovering indigenous heritage sites. The Big Galah is an important tourist spot, but the Wadlata Outback Centre must be visited because it shows the evolution of the Flinders Ranges and South Australian Outback. The city also has the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden location, where you can see and purchase low-rainfall native Australian plants.

From Port Augusta to Adelaide

The Eyre Peninsula is a particular spot to visit on the way to Adelaide. Still, you can take the direct route to the city, where you can stay to do some wine tasting at d’Arenberg Cube or have an extraordinary time at the Kayak Tour in Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary.

From Adelaide to Renmark

Getting to the Riverlands Region is the best opportunity to attend the Possum Parade. Whether you’re a fan of possums or not, watching them stroll around the palm trees will be a unique experience. This event takes place at the Renmark Riverfront, so make sure you don’t miss it.

From Renmark to Mildura

Crossing the border to the third stage of the trip, reaching Mildura, gets you closer to your destination. The town of Mildura is a vibrant yet chill place to stay. Mildura is known for producing citrus fruits and grapes, so you can get some fresh produce while there because the following step is another long stretch.

From Mildura to Wagga Wagga

The road to Wagga Wagga takes about six hours to cross the borders of New South Wales. You can have some fun at the Shear Outback in Hay and wander around the Australian Hall of Fame. When reaching Wagga Wagga, stroll around the beach and discover the delicious food and wine because the last long road is to Wollongong, the previous stop until you get to Sydney.

From Wollongong to Sydney, there are another one hour and 20 minutes to take your time admiring the Blue Mountains. Now you can truly rest and enjoy the beauty of Sydney.

What do you think about this trip experience?

Driving around Australia to enjoy the sights is a unique experience. Although it takes time and resources, nothing’s like getting through the wilderness and exploring the cities and small villages on the way to Sydney.
